AUTHOR VISIT TO HMS 5TH/6TH GRADE



Award-winning author-illustrator Jarrett Krosoczka, the author of over 30 books, visited HMS on May 8th. The presentation focused on the following:  plot, character development, character perspective, revising stories in unexpected ways. The title of the HMS presentation is The Middle-Grade Novel. Jarrett Krosoczka epitomizes the qualities of perseverance and optimism.

Fifth Grade Transition
  • Teacher Transition meetings: On Thursday, April 19, 2018, HMS 5th grade teachers spent the day with the 4th-grade teachers to discuss incoming students.
  • Parent Night of Incoming 5th Graders: On May 23rd at 6:30pm, parents of incoming 5th-grade students will attend an informational presentation with Mrs. Di Nola and Mrs. Karpinsky to learn about the Hampstead Middle School. Tours of the building will follow the presentation.
  • HMS Ambassador Program: During the week of June 11th, Mrs. Karpinsky and former HCS students from each 5th-grade class will return to HCS and meet with current 4th-grade students to share their middle school experience and to discuss any concerns as a peer. This day involves a brief skit about middle school and commonly asked questions.
  • Move Up Day: On June 20th incoming 5th-grade students will visit the Hampstead Middle School for a second time to meet their homeroom teachers.

Eighth Grade Transition
  • Course Selections: Pinkerton transition is in full swing at HMS. 8th graders and their parents have received their high school course schedules. This course selection process was the culmination of an in-class preparatory unit with school counselor Bob Mailloux along with school counselors from Pinkerton Academy who explained course offerings. PA counselors then met individually with each HMS student to explore course offerings to best fit their personal academic goals.

  • CU4Reality Career Day at Pinkerton on May 22nd: During the month of May, 8th-grade students and their teachers will be attending a half-day field trip titled CU4 Reality Career Day at Pinkerton Academy. Students prepared for this event with Mrs. Wolff, Mr. Mailloux, Mrs. Rubin, and Mrs. Judy Window from St. Mary’s Bank. Students will choose a career then follow their path by defining where they live, how they budget their finances, and what that life may look like in that particular workforce.

  • Annual Freshman Field Day: On August 7th, freshmen will attend the 13th Annual Freshman Field Day at Pinkerton Academy. This is a rain or shine event. On this day, freshmen will engage in team-building activities, meet PA teachers, establish computer accounts, and get their student ID cards.

Lyme disease is caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi and is transmitted to humans through the bite of infected black-legged ticks. Typical symptoms include fever, headache, fatigue, and a characteristic skin rash called erythema migrans. If left untreated, the infection can spread to joints, the heart, and the nervous system. Lyme disease is diagnosed based on symptoms, physical findings (e.g., rash), and the possibility of exposure to infected ticks.  Laboratory testing is helpful if used correctly and performed with validated methods. Most cases of Lyme disease can be treated successfully with a few weeks of antibiotics. Steps to prevent Lyme disease include using insect repellent, removing ticks promptly, applying pesticides, and reducing tick habitat. The ticks that transmit Lyme disease can occasionally transmit other tickborne diseases as well.  Please visit, https://www.cdc.gov/lyme/.

8th Grade, Isabel Povey, recipient of the 2018 NH Prudential Spirit of Community Award
Reflects...
My heart is so full as I reflect back on my time at the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards in Washington, DC. There are no words to describe my gratitude towards everyone who made it possible for me to attend, Prudential, NASSP, my mom and dad, Mrs. DiNola, and most of all Mrs. Wolff! It wouldn’t have been possible for me to represent the granite state without you! My time in Washington was spent up to the last second. We were so busy the entire time. When we first arrived, we were welcomed with Prudential and NASSP staff and interviewed immediately. (See link below) Later that night, we were able to mingle with other state honorees at our welcoming ceremony and orientation. Here, I was able to meet so many amazing people. I was so humbled to hear everyone’s dedication and the impact they’ve made to their communities. I instantly clicked with everyone. We all bonded right away, it was like we’ve been best friends our whole lives. I am so lucky to say I now have a friend in every single state. These are bonds that I know I will forever cherish. The next day, we visited Arlington National Cemetery, where I was moved by hearing the stories of heroic acts that each headstone held. Then we briefly visited the capital for a photo session with all the honorees. That night, the Smithsonian Natural History Museum held an awards banquet and dinner gala with Olympian Lindsey Vonn. We were each formally awarded our medallions and recognized for our selfless service. The next morning, we headed off to a local elementary school for our national day of service. We each were assigned a different job. I got to read some of my favorite childhood books to a special education class and then visit the second and third graders and encourage them to give back to their communities too! For lunch that day, we attended a national awards ceremony at the breathtaking Andrew Mellon Auditorium with Miss America 2018, Cara Mund. Here is where I finally got a chance to meet the international honorees from Poland, South Korea, France, Japan, India, Italy, Ireland, China, and Germany. I cannot express enough how moved I was to get to know each and every honoree. We all had stories to tell and a reason to be there. After lunch, we got to tour some of the beautiful monuments. We saw the Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, Martin Luther King Monument, the Korean War Monuments, the Vietnam War Monuments, of course, the White House, and so much more! I really fell in love with the area. That night, we danced the night away on our honoree dinner cruise on the Potomac River. The next day was already the last day, we all got a private tour of the capitol before getting dropped off at the airport to go our separate ways. This was the best trip of my life, I know I will always remember everything about my time at the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards. I am so beyond thankful and I am excited to take everything I have learned from this process and transfer it to all of my future community service work! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X8Vo_LBAn1E



Fourteen 7th and 8th graders from the Choral Department participated in the New Hampshire Music Educators Association Southeast District Choir on May 5th, 2018. The following singers represented HMS where they spent the morning and afternoon in rigorous rehearsals alongside the best singers from the area. The day followed with a culminating concert at 4pm for friends and family. Congratulations, Bravo, and Brava!

Band News

Four of our 8th-grade band members represented HMS at the New Hampshire Music Educators' Association Southeast District Music Festival on May 5, 2018.  They spent an entire day in rehearsals with the best instrumentalists from the area under the baton of guest conductor Jerry Barry of the Falmouth, ME public schools.  They finished the day with a fantastic concert!

Dear Parents and Students
If you are cleaning out and have any middle school age appropriate books that you are no longer in need of, please consider donating them to HMS for an upcoming BINGO for BOOKS event for the 5th and 6th graders. There will be a drop box in the HMS lobby to collect these donations. Thank you for your help in collecting books to ensure a successful event. Please turn in all donations no later than JUNE 1st.
