Our World Club
In March, the Our World Club talked about Ireland's customs and traditions, and the folklore surrounding St. Patrick's Day. We finished up the Ireland study by using shamrock potato stamps!

We are going to investigate Earth Day in April. The Our World Club will complete activities that will remind the students that simple actions can help improve the earth's environment.

The Our World Club is for 5/6th graders. We meet during lunch and recess every Tuesday.

Congratulations to the following students who were nominated and accepted into the New Hampshire Music Educators Association's Elementary Honors Choir. They will be traveling to Concord, NH on Friday, April 13th and working with renowned Boston Children's Choir Conductor, Sophia Papoulis. There will be a culminating concert at the Grappone Conference Center at 4pm.

Art Updates
The seventh-grade year long Spanish students just completed an art integration.  Students learned about Art Deco and the history of travel posters.  They created vintage style travel posters to destinations that are Spanish speaking.  The compositions included important landmarks, landforms, or ways to travel.

Hampstead Middle School student art has been showcased at two back to back art shows.  March was student art month and student art was displayed at the Stockbridge Theater at Pinkerton Academy.  This month student artwork can be seen at the Hampstead Public Library.  Mrs. Downey would like to thank the student artists and their families for attending the openings and supporting the arts.

8th Grade News

Our eighth-grade students earlier this year continued their annual participation in the VFW Patriot’s Pen Essay Contest. The purpose of the contest is to foster youth patriotism and provide an opportunity for students to reflect on our nation's democratic ideals with the prompt: “America's gifts to my generation…” Hampstead student Alex Barbuto was recognized with first place honors at the Veterans of Foreign Wars statewide banquet in January.  With the state recognition, Alex’s essay advanced to national competition level.

We are proud to share that Alex’s essay honoring his generation's gifts of equality, diversity, and education finished in Fourth Place for the nation.  There were nearly 120,000 essays submitted to the contest so this is truly an outstanding accomplishment. With his essay, Alex represented the VFW Department of New Hampshire and received the $2,750 Alaine Benson Memorial Award.

AMERICAN LEGION ORATORICAL

Eighth-grade students have been preparing three to five-minute speeches on topics related to the United States Constitution.  As part of the American Legion Oratorical Competition, students have been working on the art of public speaking. This competition provides an excellent opportunity for students to share their knowledge of the Constitution with classmates and the HMS community.

Recently, we held our HMS competition judged by HMS staff.  Twenty-three students performed their speeches for students, staff and family members. All of the students made us proud by showcasing their public speaking skills and research.  Our top two students at the competition were Ben Adams and Ellie Crump who represented HMS at the District Competition.

At Districts, Ellie finished in third place and Ben captured top honors, first place.  Ben will be attending the State Competition on April 7th at St. Anselm Institute of Politics.

Wierd Science

The 8th-grade science classes did a pizza lab in the Family Consumer Science lab which also included a presentation on hydroponics.  This lab incorporates many concepts covered in class this quarter from adaptations to chemical and physical reactions and a new concept being introduced this week, thermal energy.  The students then used this lab knowledge and did research for further investigation into pizza science.

FCS students prepare Addams Family Themed Treats:

7th Grade has been learning about consumer and resource management.  The students participated in Life Scenarios by Banzai program sponsored by Pentucket Bank to teach financial literacy.  We then applied our new knowledge on finances to create a business plan using the Biz Kidz program. The students had to research Addams Family themed treats to sell at the concession stand.  They created a marketing poster that displayed the snack title, picture, and the ingredients. They all had fun baking and preparing our snacks for sales. After the play, we calculated our start-up cost, cost per item and compared that to what we made.  It was a fun project and all the students enjoyed each aspect of it. We plan to donate our money to a worthy charity.

Vaping 101 - What Parents Need To Know

Tuesday, April 17, 2018 from 6:30 PM - 8:00 PM

Is that a USB flash drive or a vaping device in your child's backpack?  What was originally marketed as a smoking cessation device has now become popular with teens all over the country.  Cigarette smoking may no longer be a social norm but companies have now found a way to create a whole new generation of nicotine-addicted consumers.  Many devices are also used to vape highly concentrated marijuana oil and wax with no detectable odor.   Come out and get your questions answered, learn about the different types of devices & what to look for as well as the health implications associated with vaping and addiction   Laurie Warnock of Northern New England Poison Control will be presenting.
